A little context changes the day.
Roatán’s history is a mix of Indigenous settlement, centuries of Spanish-British rivalry and the growth of Afro-Caribbean and Garifuna communities. Its protected bays attracted sailors, traders and pirates, while 19th-century migration from the Cayman Islands helped shape the English-speaking island culture still visible today. Tourism and diving arrived much later, built around the same reef and coastal geography that had always defined life here.

Before European colonisation, the Bay Islands were inhabited by Indigenous peoples connected to cultures on the Honduran mainland. From the 16th through the 18th centuries, Roatán repeatedly changed hands or influence as Britain and Spain competed across the western Caribbean, and its coves became useful to privateers and other seafarers. In the 1800s, settlers and formerly enslaved people from the Cayman Islands became an important part of the island population, while Garifuna settlement at Punta Gorda added another enduring cultural strand. Britain briefly claimed the Bay Islands as a colony before they were formally returned to Honduras. In the late 20th century, diving and resort tourism expanded rapidly around the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, bringing new investment while making marine conservation increasingly important.
