A little context changes the day.
Costa Maya is not an old colonial port but a modern cruise gateway on a coast whose deeper history is Maya and maritime. Nearby Mahahual remained a small fishing community for much of the 20th century, while archaeological sites such as Chacchoben connect the port call to a much older civilisation. The purpose-built cruise pier accelerated development at the end of the 20th century and changed the local economy dramatically.

The southern Quintana Roo coast was historically far less urbanised than the resort corridor around Cancún and Playa del Carmen, although Maya communities and trade networks long predated modern tourism. Mahahual developed as a fishing village beside the Caribbean and the offshore reef system. Construction of a large cruise facility created what is now marketed as Costa Maya, placing the region within major western-Caribbean itineraries. Hurricane Dean badly damaged the port in 2007, and cruise operations resumed after reconstruction. That contrast between a new cruise complex, an older fishing village and ancient sites inland is the key to understanding the destination.
