A little context changes the day.
Cozumel was settled by the Maya and became an important pilgrimage island associated with Ixchel as well as a stop on Caribbean trade routes. Spanish expeditions reached the island in the early 16th century, while later upheaval on the Yucatán Peninsula helped repopulate San Miguel in the 19th century. Diving, reef tourism and cruise travel then transformed the island without erasing its Maya and fishing-community roots.

Archaeological sites across Cozumel show occupation long before European contact, and San Gervasio preserves the island’s best-known surviving Maya remains. Juan de Grijalva’s expedition reached Cozumel in 1518, followed soon after by Hernán Cortés, and disease and colonial disruption contributed to a severe population decline. During the Caste War of Yucatán, refugees settled on the island and San Miguel was formally recognised in 1849. The local municipality records Cozumel as an early tourism pioneer in Quintana Roo and the state’s first port to receive a cruise ship in 1960, a turning point that helps explain the island’s modern waterfront economy.
