A little context changes the day.
Grand Cayman’s history is rooted in seafaring, turtling and small coastal settlements rather than plantation-scale colonial development. George Town grew into the islands’ administrative and commercial centre as maritime work connected Caymanians to the wider Caribbean and Atlantic. Tourism and financial services later reshaped the economy, while the island’s reef and seafaring culture remained central to its identity.

Although Columbus sighted the Cayman Islands in 1503, permanent settlement came much later under British influence from Jamaica. Early Caymanians relied on fishing, turtling, shipbuilding and work aboard merchant vessels, creating a strong maritime tradition that still informs local culture. Britain formally administered the islands with Jamaica until Jamaican independence in 1962, when Cayman chose to remain a British Overseas Territory. George Town expanded with modern banking and tourism, and Seven Mile Beach became one of the Caribbean’s best-known resort areas. For cruise visitors, the tender harbour is a reminder that the town’s relationship with the sea predates the modern visitor economy by centuries.
