A little context changes the day.
Ocho Rios grew from a small north-coast Jamaican settlement associated with fishing, agriculture and shipping into one of the island’s best-known resort towns. Its harbour once served exports such as bananas before tourism changed the waterfront and local economy. Waterfalls, rivers and lush limestone landscapes then became the destination’s defining attractions.

The town known locally as Ochi sits in St. Ann, a parish with deep Indigenous, colonial and plantation-era history. For much of its development, Ocho Rios was modest compared with Kingston or Montego Bay, but its harbour supported agricultural exports and coastal trade. Resort investment and cruise infrastructure expanded rapidly during the second half of the 20th century, turning the former fishing and shipping town into an international tourism centre. Dunn’s River Falls, the White River and nearby garden estates now drive much of the visitor experience, while local food, music and community life connect the resort landscape to broader Jamaican culture.
