A little context changes the day.
Valletta was founded by the Knights of St John after their defence of Malta during the Great Siege of 1565. Built as a planned fortified capital on the Sciberras peninsula, it combined military engineering with churches, palaces and civic institutions. Its dense Baroque streets survived later British rule and heavy Second World War bombing to become one of Europe’s most concentrated historic capitals.

Grand Master Jean Parisot de Valette gave his name to the new city, which was designed to strengthen control of Malta’s Grand Harbour after the Ottoman siege. The Knights brought architects, artists and resources from across Europe, creating St John’s Co-Cathedral, auberges for the different langues of the order and an elaborate defensive system. French occupation briefly interrupted the Knights’ rule in 1798, after which Malta became part of the British Empire. Valletta’s harbour was strategically important during both world wars and suffered major bombing damage. Independence and later restoration preserved the compact city, which UNESCO recognises for the extraordinary concentration of monuments within its fortifications.
