A little context changes the day.
Corfu’s position at the entrance to the Adriatic made it strategically important to Byzantine, Venetian, French and British powers. Venice controlled the island for centuries and built the formidable fortifications that helped keep it outside Ottoman rule. British administration ended in 1864 when Corfu and the other Ionian Islands joined the modern Greek state.

Ancient Corcyra was a significant Greek polis and later became part of the Roman and Byzantine worlds. Medieval instability eventually gave way to long Venetian rule beginning in the late Middle Ages, during which the island served as a defensive outpost guarding approaches to the Adriatic. Repeated Ottoman sieges were repelled, strengthening Corfu’s reputation as one of the region’s most fortified places. French and then British control followed the fall of Venice, bringing new civic institutions and architecture. Corfu Town’s UNESCO-listed old centre, arcaded Liston, fortresses and churches therefore feel less like a typical Cycladic destination and more like a compact record of Adriatic-European rivalry.
