A little context changes the day.
Messina has guarded the narrow strait between Sicily and mainland Italy since ancient times, making it a strategic harbour for trade and military movement. Earthquakes—especially the catastrophic 1908 disaster—destroyed much of the historic city, so modern Messina is largely a reconstruction. Nearby Taormina preserves a different story, with Greek and Roman remains set above the Ionian coast.

Founded in antiquity as Zancle and later known as Messana, the city prospered because ships moving through the Strait of Messina naturally passed its harbour. Byzantine, Arab, Norman, Spanish and other rulers controlled Sicily across the centuries, while the port remained strategically important. The 1908 earthquake and tsunami killed tens of thousands and devastated the urban fabric, and Second World War bombing brought further destruction. Taormina, by contrast, survived with a celebrated ancient theatre and medieval streets on a hilltop south of the port. Cruise excursions often combine these two very different historical landscapes: a rebuilt working strait city and a preserved resort town rooted in antiquity.
