A little context changes the day.
St. Thomas became a Danish Caribbean colony in the 17th century, with Charlotte Amalie developing into a busy free port and trading centre. The island’s history is inseparable from slavery, Atlantic commerce and the movement of people through one of the region’s best natural harbours. The United States purchased the Danish West Indies in 1917, and the island later evolved into a major tourism and cruise destination.

The Danish West India Company established control over St. Thomas in the 1600s, and the harbour encouraged international trade as well as privateering. Enslaved Africans formed the labour base of the colonial economy until emancipation in the Danish West Indies in 1848. Charlotte Amalie’s warehouses, stair streets, churches and forts still reflect its role as a commercial entrepôt. After the United States acquired St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix from Denmark in 1917, military and commercial connections to the mainland increased. Modern cruise development now dominates parts of the waterfront, but historic Charlotte Amalie remains close enough to reveal the older mercantile city.
