A little context changes the day.
The island of Saint Martin has been shared by French and Dutch administrations since the 17th century, giving a small island an unusually layered political identity. Philipsburg was established on the Dutch side in the 18th century between Great Bay and the salt pond. Salt, trade and later duty-free commerce shaped the town before tourism became the dominant economic force after the mid-20th century.

Indigenous settlement long preceded European claims, but the island became a contested Caribbean possession after Spanish, Dutch and French activity in the 1600s. The Dutch and French eventually formalised a division of the island that survives today. Philipsburg developed around the Great Salt Pond and harbour, with salt production and regional trade central to its growth. Sint Maarten’s designation as a duty-free port in 1939 and the expansion of air travel and tourism after the Second World War transformed the economy. The cruise terminal, Front Street and Great Bay now sit directly on top of that transition from salt-and-shipping town to international visitor hub.
