A little context changes the day.
San Juan was founded by the Spanish in 1521 and became one of the most important fortified ports in the Caribbean. Massive walls and forts protected the entrance to San Juan Bay and helped the city serve Spain’s Atlantic empire for centuries. Today Old San Juan remains the historic core, while the wider capital has grown into Puerto Rico’s cultural and commercial centre.

The settlement moved from the earlier site of Caparra to the small islet that now contains Old San Juan, where the harbour was easier to defend. Spain built and expanded fortifications including El Morro and San Cristóbal as rival European powers contested Caribbean shipping routes. The city remained under Spanish rule until Puerto Rico passed to the United States in 1898 after the Spanish-American War. In the 20th century, urban growth spread well beyond the old walls, but the colonial street plan, forts and civic buildings survived. Puerto Rico’s tourism authority describes San Juan as the island’s centre of history and culture, and that mix of old-world fabric with a modern Caribbean capital is exactly what cruise visitors encounter.
