A little context changes the day.
Mykonos was an ancient Cycladic island closely tied to nearby Delos, one of the Aegean’s major sacred centres. Venetian and Ottoman periods followed, and the island later played a role in the Greek War of Independence under Manto Mavrogenous. Shipping and trade declined in the 19th century, but tourism revived the economy and eventually made Mykonos one of Greece’s most internationally recognised islands.

Ancient Mykonos served as a supply and transit point for Delos and moved through Roman and Byzantine rule before Venetian families took control after the Fourth Crusade. Ottoman influence followed, though the island retained forms of local self-government and developed a maritime trading culture. During the Greek Revolution, Manto Mavrogenous used her wealth and influence in support of independence and remains one of the island’s defining historical figures. Archaeological work on Delos helped attract early travellers, and international tourism accelerated after the mid-20th century. Visit Greece now presents Mykonos as a meeting point between cosmopolitan life and Cycladic character, but its windmills, chapels and harbour lanes predate the luxury image by centuries.
