Kuşadası is a modern Aegean port whose cruise importance comes largely from its proximity to Ephesus, one of the great cities of the ancient Mediterranean. Ephesus flourished under Greek and especially Roman rule as a commercial, religious and administrative centre. As its harbour silted and regional power shifted, the ancient city declined while later settlements developed closer to today’s coast.

Ephesus occupied a strategic position on Aegean trade routes and became famous for the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Under Roman rule it grew into the capital of the province of Asia, with monumental streets, baths, theatres and the Library of Celsus reflecting its wealth. The city also became important to early Christianity through traditions associated with St Paul, St John and the Virgin Mary. Progressive silting moved the shoreline away from the ancient harbour and contributed to decline. Kuşadası itself expanded around a later coastal harbour and today functions as the practical maritime gateway to the archaeological landscape inland.
