A little context changes the day.
Piraeus has been Athens’ maritime gateway since classical antiquity, when Themistocles developed it as the city’s main naval and commercial harbour. The Long Walls once linked port and city into a single defensive system, making control of Piraeus essential to Athenian power. Modern Piraeus was rebuilt as a working port in the 19th century and remains Greece’s largest passenger harbour.

Ancient Piraeus was carefully planned around several natural harbours and became the naval base from which Athens projected power across the Aegean. Fortifications and the Long Walls tied it physically to Athens, while war and later invasions led to centuries of decline. The port revived after the creation of the modern Greek state, growing with shipping, industry and migration. Today its main harbour, Zea Marina and Mikrolimano sit beside archaeological remains, neoclassical buildings and dense urban neighbourhoods. Visit Greece describes Piraeus as both the gateway to the Aegean and a destination in its own right, although cruise itineraries naturally pull many visitors straight toward Athens and the Acropolis.
