A little context changes the day.
Ketchikan developed around fishing, salmon canneries, timber and a sheltered waterfront in Southeast Alaska. The region is also part of the traditional homelands of Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian peoples, whose art and clan histories long predate the modern town. Cruise tourism now dominates the summer waterfront, but Creek Street, canning history and totem collections still reflect older economic and cultural layers.

Ketchikan’s non-Native settlement grew at the end of the 19th century as fishing and commercial activity expanded along Tongass Narrows. Salmon canneries made the town a major processing centre, while timber became important in the 20th century. At the same time, Native communities maintained complex cultural traditions visible in carved poles, regalia, stories and contemporary art. The closure of large industrial operations shifted the economy increasingly toward tourism, fishing and services. Totem Bight, Saxman and local museums help visitors understand that the poles are not generic decorations but part of specific clan histories, while Creek Street preserves the architecture of the town’s early commercial waterfront.
