A little context changes the day.
Juneau grew rapidly after gold discoveries in the 1880s on land that had long been part of Tlingit territory. Mining transformed the Gastineau Channel waterfront and eventually helped the town become Alaska’s territorial and then state capital. Today government and tourism have replaced much of the mining economy, while glaciers, mountains and Tlingit cultural heritage remain central to the city’s identity.

Tlingit communities used the region’s waterways and resources long before prospectors arrived. The discovery of gold near what became Juneau drew miners and companies, leading to large hard-rock operations around the channel and on nearby Douglas Island. The territorial government moved from Sitka to Juneau in the early 20th century, and the city retained capital status when Alaska became a state in 1959. As major mines closed, public administration, fishing and later cruise tourism became increasingly important. Mendenhall Glacier and the surrounding Tongass landscape now define many visitor experiences, but the city’s museums, clan houses and public art provide essential context for the Indigenous history that predates the gold-rush town.
