A little context changes the day.
Icy Strait Point grew from a salmon cannery beside Hoonah, a Tlingit community with far older roots on Chichagof Island. The cannery began operating in the early 20th century and later closed as the fishing industry changed. Its historic buildings were eventually redeveloped as a cruise destination with strong local ownership and a focus on Tlingit culture and wildlife.

Hoonah is home to the Huna Tlingit, whose relationship with the surrounding waters, forests and Glacier Bay region reaches back generations. Industrial salmon processing brought wage work and new infrastructure to the waterfront, and the cannery complex became an important part of local economic history. After operations declined, the site was preserved and adapted rather than demolished. Icy Strait Point’s modern cruise development therefore differs from many purpose-built ports: historic cannery structures remain part of the visitor experience, and the destination’s connection to Hoonah means cultural interpretation and local employment are central to its identity.
