A little context changes the day.
Cabo San Lucas developed from a remote fishing and maritime outpost into an international resort at the southern tip of the Baja California Peninsula. Commercial fishing, especially tuna, supported much of its early 20th-century growth before road and air links opened the region to large-scale tourism. The Arch at Land’s End became the visual symbol of a destination built where the Pacific meets the Gulf of California.

Indigenous peoples inhabited the southern peninsula long before Spanish exploration reached the area, but permanent colonial settlement remained limited compared with mainland Mexico. The modern town’s economy grew around fishing and a tuna cannery, with sport fishing later attracting visitors from the United States. Tourism accelerated in the second half of the 20th century as the Transpeninsular Highway, airport access and resort investment transformed Los Cabos. Cabo San Lucas retained a working marina even as hotels spread along the coast. Cruise ships still tender offshore, so the harbour arrival gives visitors a direct view of the town’s transition from fishing port to resort centre.
