A little context changes the day.
Palma’s history layers Roman foundation, Islamic Medina Mayurqa and the Christian city created after the 13th-century conquest by James I of Aragon. The cathedral, Almudaina palace and old lanes around the harbour preserve that sequence particularly clearly. Later maritime trade, tourism and rapid 20th-century growth turned Palma into the capital of a globally known island destination.

The Romans established Palma on a site with earlier Talaiotic settlement, and the city later passed through Vandal and Byzantine rule. Under Muslim control it became Medina Mayurqa, an important Balearic centre whose urban legacy still influences the old city. James I conquered Mallorca in 1229, after which Christian institutions reshaped the city and construction of the great Gothic cathedral began. Palma prospered through Mediterranean commerce but also experienced piracy, political change and economic cycles. In the modern era, the port expanded alongside mass tourism, yet the monumental waterfront still places the cathedral, palace and historic harbour within the same visual frame.
