A little context changes the day.
Marseille was founded by Greek settlers as Massalia around 600 BC, making it one of Europe’s oldest continuously important port cities. Roman, medieval and modern trade repeatedly remade the city as people arrived from across the Mediterranean. Its identity today still comes from that port-city mix of migration, commerce, working neighbourhoods and an unusually strong relationship with the sea.

Massalia grew into a successful Greek trading city before coming under Roman control in the 1st century BC. The harbour continued to matter through the medieval period, but Marseille expanded dramatically in the 19th century as French colonial trade connected it with North Africa and the wider Mediterranean. Waves of migration created the cosmopolitan city seen today, while wartime destruction and post-war reconstruction altered parts of the old centre. Marseille Tourism describes the city as one that has rebuilt on itself for more than 2,600 years, which is visible in the contrast between Le Panier, the Vieux-Port, 19th-century boulevards and contemporary landmarks such as Mucem.
