A little context changes the day.
Abu Dhabi developed from a coastal settlement tied to fishing, pearling and tribal networks into the capital of the United Arab Emirates. The discovery and export of oil in the 20th century transformed the city’s scale, infrastructure and political influence. Yet the old relationship with sea, oasis and desert still shapes how Emirati heritage is presented alongside the modern skyline.

The Bani Yas confederation established a settlement on Abu Dhabi island in the 18th century, and the ruling Al Nahyan family made it an important political centre. Pearling and maritime trade sustained the community until the Gulf pearling economy collapsed in the early 20th century. Commercial oil production from the 1960s generated the resources for rapid urban development under Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. When the United Arab Emirates formed in 1971, Abu Dhabi became the federal capital. The city later diversified into finance, culture and tourism, with institutions such as Louvre Abu Dhabi adding a new cultural layer to a place whose recent physical growth has been extraordinarily fast.
