A little context changes the day.
Phuket’s history was shaped first by tin mining and maritime trade long before beaches became its global image. Chinese, Malay, Thai and European commercial influences are visible in the Sino-Portuguese streets of Phuket Old Town. Tourism expanded dramatically from the late 20th century, turning the island into one of Thailand’s busiest resort destinations while the old trading centre remained inland from the beaches.

The island occupied a useful position on routes through the Andaman Sea, and tin deposits drew merchants and workers from across the region. Chinese migration played a major role in the mining economy, and wealthy families built the shophouses and mansions now associated with Phuket Town. The island also entered Thai national memory through resistance to a Burmese attack in the 18th century. Roads, air travel and international beach tourism changed the economy in the second half of the 20th century, with Patong and other coastal areas developing rapidly. The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami caused devastating loss along the west coast, followed by reconstruction and new attention to disaster preparedness.
