A little context changes the day.
Cape Town stands on land long connected to Khoekhoe and San communities and became a Dutch colonial refreshment station in 1652. The settlement expanded through slavery, dispossession and maritime trade before passing to British control and later becoming central to South Africa’s political history. Robben Island, District Six and the waterfront all reveal different sides of a city shaped by colonialism, apartheid and democratic transition.

The Dutch East India Company established a station at Table Bay to supply ships travelling between Europe and Asia, importing enslaved people from Africa and Asia and pushing colonial settlement into Indigenous lands. British control followed around the turn of the 19th century, and the port grew with regional trade and mineral-driven expansion inland. Under apartheid, forced removals reshaped neighbourhoods such as District Six, while Robben Island became internationally associated with political imprisonment and resistance. Nelson Mandela’s release and South Africa’s democratic transition transformed the city’s global symbolism. The V&A Waterfront occupies a working harbour landscape whose commercial success should be read alongside those deeper and often painful histories.
