A little context changes the day.
Belfast grew from a small settlement into a major industrial port during the 18th and 19th centuries, becoming famous for linen, engineering and shipbuilding. Harland and Wolff built RMS Titanic here, a legacy now central to the redeveloped waterfront. The city’s modern story also includes the partition of Ireland, decades of conflict known as the Troubles and a continuing peace process.

Belfast’s location at the head of Belfast Lough supported trade, but industrialisation transformed the scale of the city. Linen production, ropeworks, heavy engineering and shipbuilding drew workers and investment, while sectarian and political divisions sharpened as Ireland’s constitutional future became contested. After partition in 1921, Belfast became the capital of Northern Ireland. The Troubles from the late 1960s to the 1998 Good Friday Agreement left a profound social and physical legacy that remains visible in murals, memorials and interface areas. The regenerated Titanic Quarter shows another side of that history: a working shipyard landscape adapted into museums, offices and visitor attractions.
